Helen holds a Master of Journalism degree from the Graduate School of Journalism, University of California at Berkeley, with an emphasis on business reporting. She also earned her undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature from University of California at Berkeley.

Currently based in San Diego, California, she has traveled throughout Asia, Europe and the United States.

When she was born in Honolulu, her grandfather gave her a name that reflected the beauty of Hawaii -- ocean cloud. In Chinese, ocean cloud is hai yun. In Hawaiian, it is kai ao. The word kaiao in Hawaiian also means "dawn" or "enlightenment."
